NY City Council Says Village Voice Media Profits from Sex Trafficking

The NY City Council is drafting a resolution asking Village Voice Media to shut down the “adult” section of its classified ad site Backpage.com. The resolution describes the site as a “platform to traffic minors for sex.”

Introduced by Council members Brad Lander and Melissa Mark-Viverito at a council meeting yesterday,  the resolution states that a “vast majority” of sex trafficking cases brought by the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office involves Backpage. Both Council members claim that Village Voice Media is profiting from the exploitation of children.

According to The New York Observer, Norma Ramos, executive director of the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women, said in a statement, “Backpage is now the leading online facilitator of sex trafficking, operating in that least 10 other countries, generating an estimated $2 million per month– all earned through a reckless disregard for human rights.”
